The £1,000 fine headlight rule everyone is breaking
Lots of motorists didn't know that this simple habit with their headlights could land them with a £1,000 fine and points on their license.
Many drivers regularly flash their headlights at other road users to tell them to proceed. However, according to the Highway Code, the only reason your headlights should be flashed is to alert other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to your presence.
Experts argue that this gesture could be interpreted in many different ways and if incorrectly interpreted, could lead to an accident.
Some motorists may also use their headlights to alert other drivers to speed cameras or police checkpoints, but doing so could result in a £1,000 fine and points if caught by authorities.
Highway Code rules also advise that headlights should not be used to intimidate other road users, and aggressive flashing could be considered “road rage”.
