How much should it cost to replace a water pump? (2026)

Water pump replacement typically costs between £350 and £900 in the UK, depending on the make and model of the car and what type of garage you take it to.

In this article, we’ll take a look at some factors that affect water pump replacement costs, when you need to get it done, and timing belt considerations.

What affects water pump replacement costs?

Like any repair job, there are many factors that affect the cost you pay:

Car make and model

Parts costs vary greatly between brands. For luxury marques such as BMW and Mercedes, parts are in some cases 40-70% more expensive than others.

Whilst there are different levels of part quality, it’s generally recommended to go for a high-quality water pump, as it is so integral to the engine's reliability.

Complexity

If your car has a particularly high-tech, large or sporty engine, the chances are access will be limited, meaning the mechanic has to spend more time removing parts, and therefore higher labour costs.

Timing chain or timing belt

On engines with timing belts, changing the water pump usually comes with the added cost of a new timing belt kit. On chain-driven engines, they are usually separate, lowering the cost.

Independent or main dealer

Main dealer labour rates are usually much higher than those of independent garages; they will also want to use only dealer-sold parts. On the other hand, dealer work invoices are likely to hold more value at resale or trade-in.

An independent specialist will often give you the best combination of expertise and price, offering cost-effective ways to repair your car, without compromising on quality.

What happens if you put off repairing a water pump?

Nobody likes spending hundreds on car repairs, so it's understandable that you may want to put off replacing a water pump, but not doing so could land you with a much larger bill in the near future.

The most common reason water pumps need replacement is when they are leaking. This means the engine's coolant level is constantly dropping. Unless you are meticulous with checking and topping up your coolant (including making sure the concentration is correct), it is easy to let your car run low.

Running an engine for even a minute or two without sufficient coolant can cause damage, ranging from blown head gaskets to warped engine blocks.

Should I replace the timing belt when doing a water pump?

It usually makes sense to fit a new timing belt kit when doing a water pump, as the extra parts cost is usually outweighed by the extra labour time incurred by doing each job separately.

This is because on most engines with a timing belt, the water pump is driven by the timing belt. Meaning in order to replace the water pump, the engine has to be locked, the timing belt removed, and then replaced afterwards.

With a new timing belt being around £50-£150, unless your car has had a new belt fitted very recently, it makes sense to simply replace it with a new one.

Should I replace the water pump when doing a timing belt?

It makes sense to replace the water pump when doing a timing belt, as the two jobs share many of the same steps to replace.

A replacement water pump generally costs between £50 and £100, so it ends up being a fraction of the total cost, for the peace of mind of a major servicing item being sorted early.
