A leaking water pump is at the other end of the scale, at between £600 and £1,200. As it often requires the cam belt to be removed, you may as well change that at the same time.

Thermostat housings can also commonly cause leaks, budget between £260 and £450 to have this repaired with a new housing and gasket.

What is the likely cause of a coolant leak on a Ford Focus?

Many different parts can cause coolant leaks, with causes ranging from ageing rubber seals or hoses to broken or damaged radiators. These are a few common causes to look out for:

It also drains coolant onto the road surface unnecessarily, and costs money to refill. Using water is not a good solution, as this can cause internal corrosion, and the risk of coolant freezing in the winter. 

How to find a coolant leak

There are a few ways to find the source of a coolant leak. The most basic method is to inspect the system from above and below with a keen eye, to find telltale white marks, and any damp areas, specifically around pipe connections and sealing gaskets.

Pressure testers are helpful, as they use compressed air to confirm leaks, as well as expediting the leak to make it more visible. UV dye products are also commonly used to find hard to detect leaks. A UV torch is then used to identify the source of the leak.

Most of the jobs mentioned above will require an amount of disassembly, meaning it can sometimes be out of the scope of a home mechanic, but it can be useful to know where the leak is coming from regardless.

It is strongly recommended to drive as little as possible if you suspect your car has a coolant leak. Not only can it be harmful to the environment and other road users, but your engine overheating is a costly price to pay.
