The cost of parts can be researched online and via car parts vendors, but the labour time required to complete a job is much more difficult to know. Some mechanics may add time to a job that wasn’t spent, meaning you pay more for no extra work.

 The labour time seems excessive or isn't clearly explained on your invoice.

Ask for a quote before starting work, and get a comparable estimate, including a labour time estimate from a different, ideally specialist garage.

Suspension components such as ball joints and CV joints have rubber boots fitted to prevent dirt from getting in. 

These being intact is an MOT requirement and as such some unscrupulous garages have been known to “find” a split or tear in the boot whilst inspecting, requiring a replacement.

 You're told they need replacing but aren't shown the damage.

Ask the mechanic to point out the fault before agreeing to any repairs.

8. Finding problems during a free inspection

A common way for garages to drum up new business is to offer free check-ups of your suspension, brakes or the whole car. Whilst most are legitimate and necessary, it would be easy for the mechanic to flag up work that isn't yet necessary.

 A free inspection results in a long list of urgent repairs.

If expensive work is recommended, consider getting a second opinion before going ahead.

Technical jargon can sometimes be used to confuse drivers into approving repairs they don't fully understand, especially if they know you have little experience working with cars.

 The explanation is full of complicated terminology but lacks a clear reason why the work is needed.

Don't be afraid to ask for a simple explanation. A reputable garage should be able to explain the issue in plain English.

10. Using fake or poor-quality replacement parts

Some garages may fit cheaper or used parts while charging for brand-new or manufacturer-approved components.
