Track Rod End Repair Cost

Track rod ends are one of the more common repair items on car suspension systems, as they take a lot of impact during normal driving, especially over rough and bumpy roads.

Thankfully, they are relatively easy and cheap to replace. In this article, we’ll take a look at how much they typically cost to replace, and how to know if yours need doing.

  • How much does replacing track rod ends cost?

Track rod ends typically cost between £70 and £160 per side to replace, depending on parts costs. On most cars, the cost of the track rod end will be much less than the labour to replace it.

Once you have replaced any suspension components, you should get the tracking done, which costs between £40 and £70.

If you have big repair bills on the horizon, Bumper's car repair finance can help break down the cost into smaller monthly payments.

    What are track rod ends?

Track rod ends connect your car's wheel hubs to the steering rack. They allow for movement not only of the wheels turning left and right, but also the suspension travelling up and down.

This is why they tend to wear out faster on cars that are frequently driven on very bumpy or potholed roads.

How long do track rod ends last?

Typically, track rod ends should last at least 50,000 miles, with some lasting well over 100,000 and others significantly less, it really depends on the car model, and mainly what type of roads you drive on.

In addition, things like driving up kerbs to park, or hitting large pot holes can dramatically reduce your tie rod, and other suspension components’ lifespan.

How to tell if your track rod ends need replacing

You might have been told your track rod end is bad at an MOT or during a service, but you can also check yourself. Here's how:

    • Check for play or a “dead zone” in the steering. This can be done at low speeds or when stationary; slightly rock the steering wheel from the central position, and feel for a knocking or general feel of slack or play.

    • Check your tyres. Track rod end wear can cause the wheel tracking, or alignment, to be out. This will cause uneven tyre wear on your front tyres. Bear in mind, this could also be caused by improperly adjusted tracking too.

Can you drive with worn track rod ends?

You should get a worn track rod end replaced as soon as possible and not drive on it until then. A worn track rod end causes unpredictable steering and could even cause a loss of control if the joint were to fail.
