The evaporator is one of the key components in an air conditioning system. Along with the condenser/radiator and compressor.

As the name suggests, the evaporator coil provides a place for the refrigerant sealed inside the system to evaporate. In doing so, it absorbs heat energy, which is removed by way of pipes, out of the cabin.

A fan is used to move air past the now cold evaporator coil, creating the stream of super cool air we associate with a well-functioning AC system. This is the basic premise behind any air conditioning system.

With the bonnet open, pull the bonnet release lever a few times to work in the grease, and then check that the bonnet shuts and opens normally. If the latch grease being dry and old was the issue, this should help the bonnet release easier. 

Why does my car say the bonnet is open when it's not?

Most modern cars have a sensor on the bonnet latch, to detect when the bonnet is open. This is a useful feature for both safety and security purposes. 

However, just like the bonnet latch, these switches can become stiff or have the grease dry out. This means that even though the bonnet is shut, the switch is not activating normally to tell the car it's closed. 

In some cases a similar process can be used to clean the bonnet switch, using electrical contact cleaner to free the switch off. If the problem persists, though, it may need a new bonnet switch.

Can I drive with a faulty bonnet latch or switch?

You should only drive your car if you are positive the bonnet is securely latched. In some cases a stiff bonnet latch may not mean the bonnet is still held in place, and the cable could suddenly release and pop open your bonnet whilst driving at speed.
